Why Homeowners Choose Engineered Wood

Engineered hardwood gives you the look of solid hardwood at less cost โ€” and handles the IE's dry summers and concrete slabs that solid wood can't.

๐ŸŒณ

Genuine Hardwood Surface

The top layer is real wood โ€” same species as solid hardwood. You see real grain, feel real texture, and get the warmth solid wood delivers.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ

Works Over Concrete Slabs

Most IE homes have concrete slab foundations. Engineered wood's cross-ply core resists the moisture movement that causes solid hardwood to cup and buckle.

๐Ÿ”„

Can Be Lightly Refinished

A 2โ€“3mm wear layer can be sanded and refinished once or twice โ€” extending the floor's life by decades. Not possible with laminate or vinyl.

๐Ÿ“

Wide Planks, Modern Looks

5" to 9" wide plank options open up the room and showcase natural grain. Available in wire-brushed, hand-scraped, and smooth finishes.

Engineered Wood Flooring FAQ

Answers to the questions we hear most from IE homeowners.

What's the difference between engineered wood and solid hardwood?

Solid hardwood is milled from a single piece of wood โ€” refinishable many times but sensitive to moisture. Engineered wood has a real hardwood veneer (2โ€“3mm) on a cross-ply core that resists moisture movement. Better choice for slab foundations and California climates.

Can engineered wood be installed over a concrete slab?

Yes โ€” that's one of its main advantages. We moisture-test your slab first, then install via glue-down or floating over a moisture barrier depending on readings.

Can engineered hardwood be refinished?

Yes, typically once or twice. The 2โ€“3mm solid wood veneer can be lightly sanded to remove scratches or change the stain color โ€” a major advantage over laminate or vinyl.

How do I clean engineered hardwood floors?

Sweep or vacuum regularly and damp-mop with a hardwood-approved cleaner. Avoid soaking the floor โ€” excessive water is the main enemy. We provide care instructions after installation.

How long does engineered wood last?

With proper care, 25โ€“40 years. The veneer thickness and finish quality are the key variables. We only carry brands with at minimum a 2mm wear layer.

How much does engineered wood installation cost?

Typical IE pricing runs $13โ€“$18 per square foot installed, depending on species, plank width, subfloor prep, and installation method. Exact written price after measuring.
